Two Dallas/Fort Worth-Area LifeCare Hospitals Earn Prestigious National Wound Care Certifications

05/30/2019

PLANO, TEXAS (May 28, 2019) ―  LifeCare Health Partners is pleased to announce two of its Dallas/Fort Worth-area hospitals have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease-Specific Wound Care Certification. The certification is a symbol of the level of quality and clinical excellence LifeCare Hospitals of Fort Worth and LifeCare Hospitals of Plano demonstrate through their commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. In total, three of LifeCare’s Wound Care programs – in Denver, Fort Worth and Plano – have achieved this national designation.

To qualify, both hospitals underwent rigorous on-site evaluations where a Joint Commission surveyor reviewed clinical practice guidelines and performance measures. Both hospitals’ Wound Centers provide individualized treatment plans designed for high-risk patients with impaired tissue integrity.

“We’re so proud that two of our facilities in one of the largest markets in the country have earned this national recognition for the way our specially trained teams treat chronic and complex wounds,” said Amy Broderick, President – Hospital Division at LifeCare Health Partners. “This designation demonstrates our hospitals’ commitment to our patients, providers and community members.”

The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification, which is awarded for a two-year period, evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:

  • Compliance with consensus-based national standards
  • Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care
  • An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities

According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), called “Management of Chronic Wounds—2018,” it is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Americans have chronic wounds that do not heal in four weeks or less or are complicated by other underlying medical conditions.

The LifeCare Wound Center of Fort Worth is led by Dr. Kaustubh Mestry and treats an average of 230 patients with complex wounds each year. The LifeCare Wound Center of Plano is led by Dr. Tram Hill and in 2018, treated more than 420 patients with complex wounds each year. Both centers specialize in the treatment of:

  • Post-surgical wounds
  • Pressure ulcers including deep tissue injury, arterial ulcers and venous ulcers
  • Fistulas
  • Stable burn wounds
  • Compromised muscle grafts and flap closures
  • Post-radiation tissue injury
  • Stable necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Complex ostomies
  • Complications associated with skin and bone infections
  • Complications from diabetes

Both Wound Centers offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which increases the concentration of oxygen in the blood, and is used in conjunction with advanced wound care when the patient qualifies. This technique is found to be vital to expediting the healing process by stimulating the formation of collagen matrix and angiogenesis.
